One of the main strategic priorities of Boğaziçi University is to become one of the world's leading research universities by increasing its effectiveness in research and to become a research-intensive university. In line with this goal, our university aims to encourage the production of qualified academic publications and new research projects, support research-development-innovation processes, develop centres of excellence, and prioritise large-scale, strategically important, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research. It also aims to increase capacity in research areas that can create international impact and to produce innovative solutions to global problems. The research strategy of Boğaziçi University is based on the goal of contributing to society and creating economic added value for our country by combining education and research. The University aims to assume a pioneering role in scientific research and the development of innovative projects. In this context, in the Strategic Plan of Boğaziçi University 2025-2029; it is planned to support interdisciplinary research studies and contribute to scientific discoveries by establishing collaborations and partnerships at national and international level, mainly in the fields of sustainable energy, artificial intelligence and data science, biotechnology and neuroscience, internet of things, robotics, robotics, financial technologies, climate and earthquake, artificial intelligence and digitalisation in social sciences.

R&D Strategy Documents

A large number of faculty members at our university work in close collaboration in interdisciplinary fields and these studies continue with increasing momentum. Within the scope of the three interdisciplinary projects of Boğaziçi University, "A Three-Pronged Project of Excellence: Informatics, Biotechnology and Economics", R&D Strategy Documents have been prepared jointly to emphasise the synergy created by these three fields.

Boğaziçi University has established various administrative commissions and coordinatorships to contribute to the determination of research policies, goals and values and to provide administrative support to researchers.

Research Policy Coordination (APK) Branch Directorate

Research, Planning and Coordination Branch Directorate was established in 1985 in order to carry out research, planning and statistical collection and evaluation studies required by the Rectorate and to contribute to the decision-making processes of the units serving in this direction.

Research, Planning and Coordination (RPP) Branch Directorate,

Preparing the annual activity report of the university and submitting it to the Council of Higher Education;

Publishing the information of the articles published in the journals in the indexes included in the ISI Web of Science database on the Research Website every year;

Collection and reporting of data related to national and international supported research projects;

Administrative coordination of the Research Policy Commission and the Research Policy Advisory Board;

Administrative coordination of UYGAR centres and collection and reporting of centre activity reports;

Preparation of research and statistical data files requested from our university in coordination with research units;

He is responsible for the coordination of Laboratory and Research Infrastructure (LABS portal).

Research Policy Advisory Board:

Since 2009, the Research Policy Advisory Board (APDK), which consists of the Rector, relevant Vice Rectors and faculty members from different disciplines, has been active in order to determine and support research policies. With the regularly convened APDK, all strategic decisions related to research are taken and monitored in a participatory and transparent manner at our university.

Research Policy Commission:

The Research Policy Commission is an executive commission elected by the APDK, representing researchers in the fields of social and administrative sciences, basic sciences and engineering. Planning multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research is among the duties of the Research Policy Commission and APDK.

Scientific Research Projects (BAP)

The main objective of the Scientific Research Projects (BAP) is to encourage scientific research, to promote and disseminate research life in all academic units of the University, and to create synergy within and outside the University with the projects supported by . The BAP budget consists of the state appropriation and our own income from the Non-Thesis Master's Degree Second Education programmes and Revolving Fund projects.

BAP structure consists of two main elements: BAP Commission and BAP Coordination Office. Administrative and financial transactions related to research projects supported by the BAP Commission are carried out by the BAP Coordinatorship.

BAP Commission

Within the framework of the strategic plan of our University, the BAP Commission uses all of its resources to support research projects in order to create new opportunities in research life both in the long term and in the current issues and in line with the principles determined; makes the existing resources available to all faculty members and researchers; prioritises providing special support to faculty members at the beginning of their careers.

The aim of the BAP Commission is to encourage research life in all academic units of the University, to spread the research culture and to enable research in new fields. The principle in the use of the BAP budget is to distribute the budget in a way to provide support to a large number of researchers on a project basis. The main goal expected from the projects is to develop products such as publications, patents, utility models, and to create research synergy within and outside the University.

It supports multidisciplinary research to open new research areas at the university, to establish collaborations that will enrich the research environment on campus and to create research synergy within the university; initiatives to strengthen the university research infrastructure; strategic research that will contribute to the production of forward-looking, creative solution policies in any field of social and human sciences, and advanced technology application and development studies for prototype production and / or patent / utility model application.

The BAP Commission carries out the activities of evaluating all project applications to be supported within the framework of BAP, monitoring / auditing the developments and financial processes of the ongoing projects with period reports, examining and deciding on all requests related to the projects and finalising the projects.

BAP Administrative Coordination

The BAP Coordinatorship provides the necessary support to the project coordinators for the administrative and academic procedures related to the application, evaluation, activation, execution and finalisation of BAP projects using the "Scientist Portal and Life Cycle Application"; It carries out the procedures related to the decisions to be taken by the BAP Commission and ensures that the decisions are announced to the executives.

The Coordination Office also carries out all kinds of goods and service purchases required by BAP projects, within the framework of BAP legislation, either through direct procurement or tender from domestic and foreign markets; it also carries out the registration and financial follow-up of the domestic/international travel and per diem payments made within the scope of the projects and the registration and financial follow-up of the project appropriations.

Boğaziçi University Revolving Fund Management

The purpose of Boğaziçi University Revolving Fund Enterprise is to manage the production or sale of goods or services of a priceable nature arising in relation to the duties of our University in the best way possible. Boğaziçi University Revolving Fund Enterprise prioritises research, education and training and applications that contribute to them in its activities; It contributes to R&D studies carried out within the framework of University-Industry cooperation and applications open to current technological developments. The activities that can be carried out by faculty members in the fields in which Boğaziçi University is competent within the framework of the Revolving Fund Enterprise through the Faculty / Institute / School / Centres affiliated to the Rectorate are as follows:

1. To give scientific opinions, to prepare projects, to carry out projects, to organise researches, applications, seminars, conferences, symposiums, to open courses and to provide similar services on subjects to be requested by organisations other than Higher Education Institutions and real and legal persons,

2. To ensure the application of certain scientific results and to prepare scientific reports,

3. Conducting test and analysis studies,

4. To fulfil all kinds of printing and publishing services.

5. Similar studies for one or more of these purposes,

6. To ensure the production of all kinds of work and services by using the computer infrastructure of the university,

7. Research and development, design and innovation projects to be carried out within the framework of the (k) clause added to Article 58 of Law No. 2547 pursuant to Article 5 of Law No. 6676 published in the Official Gazette dated 26.02.2016 and numbered 29636 can be summarised as.

Technology Transfer Office

The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is the main unit at the University that supports academics and researchers in their search for national and international project supports and opportunities according to their research topics. TTO aims to ensure that research project contracts are made in accordance with the relevant national legislation and rules while working to realise the University's goal of increasing the number of research projects. TTO carries out its activities in communication with ministries and organisations such as TÜBİTAK, European Commission, Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, Ministry of Development, etc., which provide support to researchers. Within the scope of cooperation with the industry, it supports academicians in R&D, consultancy projects that start with academicians, cooperation with the relevant company, the creation and negotiation of R&D service contracts, the internal contract control process of the created contract and the creation of the project budget and cost. TTO keeps a database of research project proposals and provides statistical information reports to other administrative units of the university.

Services of the Technology Transfer Office for Grants

Technology Transfer Office (TTO) helps to support the research activities of Boğaziçi University faculty members with national and international funds. TTO works to increase the number of projects carried out at our university and at the same time to ensure that the projects carried out comply with the legislation and rules. The activities within this scope fall under the following three areas of responsibility:

  • Increasing the Number of Research Activities Coordinated by the University

TTO works in communication with the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), European Commission, Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, Ministry of Development, etc. ministries and organisations that provide support to researchers, and carries out the activities listed below in order to inform the University researchers about possible funds and to use these funds effectively.

  • Collecting and reviewing information about national funds such as TÜBİTAK, TÜBA, İSTKA, Ministry of Development supports and international funds such as Horizon 2020, COST, International Bilateral Collaborations Programme; announcing information about these funds to researchers via e-mail;
  • Being a member of platforms and networks such as ECAS, PADOR, Vision2020, CRR, which are related to funding sources on behalf of the university, and sharing information about researchers when requested;
  • Sharing forms, guides, announcements related to support programmes;
  • Organisation of information days and similar events for training and guidance purposes.
  • Services Provided During Pre-Application Project Proposal Preparation

TTO supports researchers during the preparation of project proposals on various topics such as

  • Supporting researchers in the preparation of project proposal documents and budgeting;
  • Sending institutional information about the university to researchers applying for projects;
  • Assisting researchers in the search for partners for projects and the establishment of various collaborations;
  • Contacting the institutions and organisations that are foreseen to provide financial support on necessary issues;
  • Obtaining signatures from the institutional authority regarding the projects.
  • Services Provided in Post-Application Project Management Process

TTO supports faculty members and administrative units in various subjects such as the following for the effective management of projects supported by national and international institutions and organisations, in line with the University's own rules and the rules and conditions of the support that the project is funded.

  • Providing information on the documents required for the effective management of projects (e.g. VAT exemption application, staffing forms) and following their procedures;
  • Providing the forms and information needed during the preparation of the contract;
  • Negotiation of financial support agreement / contract,
  • Execution of the signing of the project contract;
  • In the contract management process of international projects; sharing information with BAP and other similar units of the University regarding legal procedures;
  • Supporting project coordinators during the reporting periods of EU projects.

In addition, TTO monitors the projects proposed and supported for research activities; keeps these applications and their results in a database; prepares statistical and other reports for the relevant administrative units of the University when necessary.

Services of the Technology Transfer Office for Intellectual Property Rights

TTO supports researchers before and after their related applications for the protection of Intellectual Property in the following areas.

  • Determination of the application method in the form of Trademark, Patent, Copyright, Utility Model or Industrial Design;

Services of the Technology Transfer Office for Contracted Industrial Projects

TTO works to develop relations with industrial companies in an institutional way and to create joint cooperation platforms with the industry. It provides support in the following areas before and after the signing of the contract for the contracted projects carried out by university researchers in partnership with the industry:

Pre-contract:

  • Meeting with Industrial Companies;
  • Identifying needs by bringing companies together with relevant academics;
  • Creating a basis for co-operation;
  • Identification of Projects.
  • Post-Contract:
  • Negotiation of the contract;
  • Preparation of contracts and finalisation of signature processes;
  • Providing support during the assignment of academics;
  • Providing support in applications for funding sources and support programmes for projects with industry;
  • Preparation of internal reports related to the projects carried out with the industry.

Technoparks

There are two Technoparks in which Boğaziçi University is institutionally involved:

Boğaziçi University Technopark

Boğaziçi Teknopark was established in 2010 to assume a leading role in the field of advanced technology and innovation with the deep-rooted history and strong infrastructure of Boğaziçi University. Within the Technopark; there are many companies operating in different sectors ranging from earthquake research to communication, from design to software, from energy to medical research in order to continue R&D activities and to produce scientific knowledge and technology. A large number of research assistants and faculty members from different disciplines, who take part in the projects carried out in Teknopark, work to transform the scientific knowledge obtained as a result of academic studies into technology. Boğaziçi University's rich library, extensive laboratory facilities and overseas connections are the driving force behind the projects carried out in the Technopark.

BÜDOTEK Technopark

Dudullu OSB Boğaziçi University Technology Development Zone and BÜDOTEK (Dudullu OSB Boğaziçi University Teknopark AŞ), the managing company of the zone, were established in 2018 with the partnership of Boğaziçi University , Dudullu Organised Industrial Zone and Boğaziçi University Foundation. BÜDOTEK aims to carry out high quality R&D studies by combining the academic staff and research infrastructure of Boğaziçi University and the production facilities of Dudullu Organised Industrial Zone in order to increase the added value created by entrepreneurs by improving their R&D, innovation and cooperation capabilities.
