Inter-University Raqball Tournament Held at Boğaziçi
The second leg of the world's first Inter-University Raqball Tournament was held at Boğaziçi University. This new and dynamic racket sport, which originated in southern France and has now made its way to Turkey, welcomed the Raqball teams from Istanbul Aydın University and Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa on 24 October 2024 at Boğaziçi University's South Square. The tournament featured intense matches between two mixed-gender teams of three players each.
Raqball is a team sport introduced and played in collaboration with the international federation. Matches, played without physical contact, consist of four quarters totaling 20 minutes. The objective of the sport is to score points by getting the ball into the opponent's target zone. While physical endurance is important due to the use of rackets, the game adopts a more controlled style, avoiding intense physical confrontations.
Mesut Okur, Sports Department Manager at Boğaziçi University and one of the first Raqball coaches in Turkey, stated that the tournament would serve as a global example. Okur emphasised that the sport supports diversity by requiring at least one female player per team in mixed-team formats. While comparing the sport to volleyball and basketball, he also noted that it is unique, enjoyable, and innovative.
The tournament offered both students and sports enthusiasts an exciting and unique experience.
