11.4.6 Pedestrian priority on campus

Prioritising Pedestrian Access on Campus

Boğaziçi University carries out a series of projects and improvement works that prioritise pedestrian access throughout the campus. With the improvement projects carried out on the campus, especially in the South Campus, it is aimed for students, staff and visitors to have a safe, comfortable and accessible pedestrian experience. While organising pedestrian routes, great care is taken to preserve the historical and natural texture.

1. Facilitating Pedestrian Access

Boğaziçi University is making improvements to the main walkways within the campus in accordance with accessibility standards. On the road extending from the entrance to the campus square in the South Campus, wide and continuous paths have been built especially for the safe movement of visually impaired pedestrians. These roads are designed in harmony with the natural and historical structure of the campus.

2. Designs Respecting the Historical Texture

During the design of the pedestrian paths, the historical and cultural heritage of the campus was preserved. During the design process, materials and vegetation that would not harm the landscape and environmental characteristics of the campus were preferred. Especially in order to ensure the continuity of sub-forest plant species, the existing plant texture has been preserved and ecological balance has been taken into consideration.

3. South Campus Entrance Improvement Project

Pedestrian and vehicle entrances at the South Campus have been reorganised and security structures, bus stops and seating and waiting areas have been improved. Thanks to these arrangements, the area from the campus entrance to the square has been made safer and more convenient for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Necessary arrangements have been made throughout the campus to ensure the safety of pedestrian roads.

4. Protection of Natural and Man-made Elements in Harmony

Every new arrangement made during the projects has been implemented by respecting the spatial memory of the campus. Care has been taken to preserve the historic fabric, while innovations have been designed to be in harmony with the natural landscape.

This pedestrian-friendly approach of Boğaziçi University makes on-campus mobility safe and accessible, while contributing to the preservation of the natural and historical richness of the university.
